Made for Someone; Why We Build Every Pinchbeck to Order

There is something rather unusual about buying a Pinchbeck.

When you choose one, it doesn't already exist.

Most watches are made long before anyone decides to own them. They sit in warehouses.Behind shop windows. In stockrooms.

Waiting.

A Pinchbeck begins differently. It begins with you. Not because we're trying to be different for the sake of it.Simply because we've never wanted to build watches any other way.

Every watch starts as a collection of carefully chosen parts. A dial. A movement. A case. Hands waiting patiently in their packaging. A leather strap that hasn't yet been fitted to the watch it will eventually belong to. On their own, they're beautifully made components. But they aren't a watch. Not yet.

Somewhere nearby is a workbench. Perhaps there's a cup of tea that's gone cold. A notebook with measurements scribbled in the margin. Morning light coming through the workshop window. This is where your watch begins.

Not on a production line.

Not on a shelf.

Here, in our workshop in the heart of historic Lincoln.

People often ask why we don't simply build hundreds of watches in advance. The honest answer is because we don't think that's what watchmaking should be. When every watch is already finished before it's chosen, something quietly changes.

The story has already happened.

The watch has been waiting.

We prefer the opposite.

We like knowing that your decision is the reason the story begins. That your watch takes its place on the bench because you chose it. Not because we guessed someone eventually might.

It isn't the quickest way to build watches. We're aware of that. Almost everything today can be delivered tomorrow.

A Pinchbeck can't.

We don't apologise for that.

Quite the opposite.

The time between placing an order and fastening your watch to your wrist is part of its story. Long before it marks birthdays, anniversaries, promotions or ordinary Tuesday afternoons, it spends time here with us.

Being assembled. Checked. Adjusted. Tested.

Prepared for the life ahead of it. We rather like knowing that.

Perhaps that's why we remember them. Ask Rob about a watch he built a few years ago and there's every chance he'll remember the dial, the strap or even the conversation that surrounded it. Not because he has an exceptional memory. Because every watch has a beginning. Every one belongs to someone.

We often say that we build watches to order. But recently we've realised there's another way of putting it. Every Pinchbeck is made for someone. Not for a warehouse. Not for a display cabinet. Not for a production target.

For one person.

Perhaps that's why they feel different. Or perhaps it's simply because every story deserves a beginning.

If you've been considering a Pinchbeck for a while, we'd love to invite you to spend a little time with the collection. Not to decide today.Simply to discover which watch feels most like yours.

After all...

Every Pinchbeck is made for someone.

Perhaps one of them was made for you.
