The Lambeth Dark: Rhythm, Discipline, and the River
“The Lambeth Dark was about modernising a heritage watch, introducing deeper tones and stronger contrast while keeping its connection to the river and rowing tradition.”
— Jason, Designer at Pinchbeck
Following the launch of our “The Story Behind The Design” series, our second focus watch is the Lambeth Dark.
The Influence
British rowing tradition stretches back centuries. Among its most enduring events is the Doggett’s Coat and Badge Race, first held in 1715 and still contested on the Thames.
The Lambeth collection draws from this world of timing, endurance, and quiet discipline.
The Lambeth Dark is its more restrained expression.
The Design Translation
A black dial anchors the design; deeper, more reflective, suited to both riverbank mornings and evening gatherings.
Accents in pewter-blue and tan subtly echo water and timber; references that remain understated rather than theatrical.
The layout prioritises clarity. Rowing is about rhythm and precision. The dial reflects that balance.
The Craft
Each Lambeth Dark is hand-assembled in Lincoln.
Straps are produced in collaboration with Tanner Bates, whose traditional leatherworking techniques ensure durability and comfort.
The watch is built to withstand daily wear, not merely ceremonial use.
Why It Is Limited
Rowing tradition is built on discipline and continuity. The Lambeth Dark honours that ethos.
Limiting production preserves the integrity of the design and its connection to heritage. It remains purposeful, not proliferated.
Who It Is For
For rowers.
For lovers of regatta season.
For those who understand that timing is everything.
Thoughts from the Designer
The Lambeth collection has always carried a strong connection to British rowing heritage, drawing inspiration from the historic Doggett’s Coat and Badge Race on the Thames. But like many long-standing designs, it also invites reinterpretation over time.
Designer Jason reflects on how the Lambeth Dark came to be.
Designer’s Perspective
Jason – Designer, Pinchbeck
I have always been drawn to colour in watch design, and for some time I had felt a pull toward revisiting the Lambeth collection.
The Lambeth Reach had been part of our range for many years, and its parchment dial carried a classic character that suited the historic roots of the watch. With a design already closely connected to the heritage of the Doggett’s river race, the challenge was finding a way to evolve the watch without losing that connection.
As we continued presenting a watch to the winner of the race each year, we also noticed something interesting happening within the rowing community itself. Younger rowers and enthusiasts were increasingly drawn toward watches with deeper tones and bolder dial designs.
That observation became the starting point for the Lambeth Dark.
Rather than moving away from the heritage of the watch, I wanted to modernise its expression. The aim was to retain the Lambeth’s identity while introducing something that felt more contemporary and confident.
The dial became the key to this shift. A deep black surface creates a much stronger presence on the wrist and provides a perfect backdrop for the other elements of the design.
To complement this darker dial, we introduced a very specific tan tone. This shade helps accentuate the Roman numerals while adding warmth to the overall design. It also subtly echoes traditional leather and rowing equipment, reinforcing the watch’s connection to river culture.
The final element was the blue accent, a colour that naturally reflects the water that inspired the watch. Against the black dial and tan detailing it creates a striking contrast, giving the watch a modern character while still honouring the heritage behind it.
The Lambeth Dark ultimately became a balance between past and present. A more contemporary expression of the Lambeth design, but one that still carries the rhythm and tradition of the river.
