The Sigma: Joy Without Novelty
“The Sigma was designed as our everyday watch; simple, clear and practical, but with colour bringing a sense of joy to something you wear every single day.”
— Jason, Designer at Pinchbeck
Following the launch of our “The Story Behind The Design” series, our fifth focus watch is the Sigma.
The Influence
Not all watches need to carry architectural or sporting reference.
Sigma explores something lighter: colour, practicality, and proportion.
Designed as a partner to the Novum line, it embraces a 36mm case — versatile, wearable, and suited to everyday life.
The Design Translation
Clear numerals. Luminous hands. Balanced spacing.
Sigma introduces colour in a way that feels deliberate rather than playful for its own sake. It offers character without gimmick.
The smaller case size reflects thoughtful proportion rather than trend.
The Craft
Despite its lighter expression, Sigma receives the same attention during assembly in Lincoln.
Precision printing ensures legibility. Assembly ensures reliability. Strap selection ensures comfort.
Why It Is Limited
Colour variations are introduced thoughtfully and in controlled numbers. This allows experimentation without diluting identity.
Each run remains considered.
Who It Is For
For those who appreciate practicality.
For everyday wearers.
For those who want precision without seriousness.
Thoughts from the Designer
The Sigma represents a different kind of design within the Pinchbeck collection; a watch created not around a specific historical reference, but around the idea of everyday wear and design evolution.
Designer Jason reflects on how the Sigma came together.
Designer’s Perspective
Jason – Designer, Pinchbeck
The Sigma is a watch I had a lot of fun designing.
Its name comes from the Greek letter Σ (Sigma), a symbol that represents the idea of a sum, bringing different elements together into one complete whole. That idea felt very fitting for the watch because it combines the things that make everyday wear enjoyable: colour, practicality and craftsmanship.
For a long time we had wanted to create what I often think of as a “house watch” for Pinchbeck; something simple, versatile and wearable every day.
Many years ago we produced a classic model called the George. It was a straightforward watch that people connected with because it was easy to live with. Over time I started thinking about how we could take that same philosophy, the idea of an everyday watch, and reinterpret it in a bolder way.
That became the starting point for the Sigma.
At 36mm it is the smallest watch we produce, but that decision was very intentional. The proportions make it comfortable, balanced and incredibly wearable, which is exactly what we wanted from a watch designed to be part of someone’s daily life.
But the size also serves another purpose. The Sigma is designed to evolve.
Rather than being tied to a single aesthetic, it gives us the freedom to explore colour in different ways over time. The structure of the watch remains constant, clear, simple and balanced, while the dial colours can change and develop.
When designing the Sigma I looked back at some of our earlier watches to understand what made them work so well. One idea stood out above everything else: clarity.
A good watch should be easy to read and easy to live with. The time should be understood instantly, almost without thinking. For a watch designed to be worn every day, that simplicity becomes incredibly important.
With that in mind, the Sigma was built around legibility and balance.
Once that foundation was established, colour became the place where the design could come alive. Instead of creating something purely safe or neutral, I wanted the watch to introduce a sense of joy into everyday wear.
The Sigma is practical, it is a tool in the traditional sense, but it is also an accessory that adds personality to what you wear.
In many ways, that balance is exactly what the watch represents.
A simple design that stays consistent, while colour allows it to change, evolve and remain playful.
