Watchmaker’s Specials; Experiment Within Discipline
“With the Watchmaker’s Specials, I get to explore and experiment. Each piece is unique, yet unmistakably Pinchbeck, a marriage of freedom and tradition.”
— Rob, Watchmaker at Pinchbeck
This post contiues our thoughts on “The Story Behind The Design” series, where you can find out more about each individual watch we create.
The Influence
Not every watch begins with architecture or sporting heritage.
Some begin at the workbench.
The Watchmaker’s Specials exist as a space for exploration within the established design language of Harold Pinchbeck.
They are not departures from the brand — they are intensifications of it.
The Design Translation
Using existing case profiles and core dial structures, these pieces explore:
Alternative dial colours
Hand-painted hands
Unique strap pairings
Subtle finishing variations
They retain proportion, restraint, and legibility — but introduce nuance and individuality.
No two runs are identical.
The Craft
Because quantities are exceptionally small, greater attention can be given to individual detail.
Hands may be painted by hand. Straps may be commissioned in bespoke leather combinations. Small adjustments are made during assembly to refine the final expression.
Each piece is hand assembled in Lincoln, often in even smaller numbers than core collections.
Why They Are Exceedingly Limited
Experiment requires freedom.
Producing these in very small numbers allows creativity without compromising the identity of the wider collection. Once a variation is complete, it is rarely repeated.
Collectors recognise them not by marketing, but by rarity.
Who They Are For
For collectors who look closely.
For those who appreciate nuance.
For those who understand that limitation is not about scarcity — but about integrity.
Thoughts from the Watchmaker
The Watchmaker’s Specials are where tradition meets experimentation; a space where ideas can be explored freely while still rooted in the principles that define Pinchbeck.
Watchmaker Rob reflects on his approach to creating these exceptionally limited timepieces.
Watchmaker’s Perspective
Rob – Watchmaker, Pinchbeck
The Watchmaker’s Specials are, in many ways, my favourite pieces to work on.
Unlike our core collections, where the design and proportions are clearly defined, these watches give me the freedom to explore and experiment. The “formulas” of Pinchbeck, case shapes, dial layouts, hand proportions, and material finishes, are still there, but within that framework, almost anything is possible.
When I assemble these watches, I approach each one like a blank canvas. Sometimes that means hand-painting the hands in a colour scheme we’ve never tried before. Sometimes it involves commissioning a bespoke strap that interacts with the dial in a surprising way. Other times it’s subtle, experimenting with finishes, machining techniques, or layering textures to see how light plays across the dial.
That creative liberty is incredibly rewarding. It allows me to push the boundaries of our design language, while still respecting the Pinchbeck DNA. Every component, from machined brass to lacquered dial to hand-assembled movement, is considered carefully, nothing is arbitrary.
Because these watches are produced in extremely small numbers, I can focus on these details in a way that isn’t possible with larger runs. Each piece becomes unique, not just in appearance, but in the story it tells. Collectors recognize that these are watches with intention, where experimentation and tradition meet.
In short, the Watchmaker’s Specials are about discovery. About taking the heritage, craftsmanship, and philosophy of Pinchbeck and seeing how far it can be stretched without ever losing sight of what makes a Pinchbeck a Pinchbeck.
